Fan Expo returns to Regina as a haven for all things geeky

With C2E2 going on this weekend it’s easy to forget that there are many other conventions going on at the same time as the Beast In Chicago throughout the world. Conventions like Fan Expo Canada in Regina Saskatchewan. Fan Expo had a great line-up this year (including Margot Kidder and Jonathan Frakes) and the Leader Post has a great article on it:

REGINA — Michelle Pine was one of many Star Trek fans trying to contain themselves at this year’s Fan Expo Regina convention.

“Oh my goodness it was so amazing,” said Pine, still flushed after meeting Jonathan Frakes, the actor who played Commander William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“My first memory of television is Star Trek, and so it was more than a thrill to meet him, and he was so nice,” said Pine, who drove in from Qu’Appelle.

Fan Expo Regina is now in its second year, and was held this past Saturday and Sunday at the Canada Centre East building at Evraz Place. Other celebrity guests in attendance included Lawrence Gilliard (Bob Stookey in the Walking Dead and D’Angelo Barksdale in The Wire), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett in the original Star Wars films), Margot Kidder (Lois Lane in the original Superman movies) and Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 and Prue Halliwell in Charmed).

Whether it’s comics, board games or anime, there’s something for every breed of nerd at Fan Expo.

It’s also evident that being a geek runs in the family. Especially in the case of Nathan and Kim Riess, who came to the convention with their parents, children and nieces.

“We’ve met a great group of people, a great community in the last year and it’s a lot of fun. You get to dress up and be a kid again,” said Nathan, who was cosplaying as a Vorlon, an alien species from the TV show Babylon 5.

And it turns out having an aunt and uncle who will go to a convention and cosplay with you is pretty rad.

“I know that if I had them as parents I would be in heaven,” said their niece McKenzie Riess, who was cosplaying as Doll from the Japanese anime series Black Butler.

Siblings Arvin and Angeli Camara also teamed up to cosplay as characters from the video game League of Legends. Arvin dressed up as Lee Sin and sported a robot head, while Angeli was holding a big blue staff as Winter Wonder Lulu.

“It’s the best nerdy convention to go to … it’s fun to get out there and express what you love and what you’re interested in,” said Arvin.

And even if you don’t happen to come from a family of geeks, conventions such as Fan Expo are a great way to meet people who have the same passions you do.

“Pretty much all of my really good friends that I’ve met have come from conventions,” said Kate Murray, who travelled from Winnipeg to attend Fan Expo, and cosplayed as Elizabeth from the video game BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea.

It sounds like Fan Expo 2016 is already a sure thing. Event co-ordinator James Armstrong said the location serves as a good addition to other western-Canadian conventions.

“If the schedule holds, we’d love to do this all again,” said Armstrong.
